Susan Law concentrated her efforts at McAllen from June 2018 through July 2019, when between 200 to 900 asylum seekers per day were released at the McAllen bus station by ICE or border patrol. These were the refugees who had been processed by immigration officials and were approved to move on to their sponsors across the country.  Susan, Elizabeth Cavazos, and their volunteers were at the bus station every day, preparing those individuals and families for a potentially 2-3 day bus trip. In addition to a welcoming face, the volunteers provided maps, information about bus transfers and legal services at their destinations, and often assistance with diapers, shoelaces, and money for food.  With the inception of MPP in the McAllen-Brownsville area in July 2019, the number of released migrants decreased significantly, so beginning in September 2019 Susan split her time between the Humanitarian Respite Center in McAllen and Matamoros. Now working remotely due to the coronavirus, Susan is in touch with families at the Matamoros camp and coordinates with the rest of the group to try to resolve issues. She also works as the Tias’ volunteer coordinator.
