Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights 2019 Laureates

In early June of this year, the Angry Tias and Abuelas, along with Detained Migrant Solidarity Committee and La Union del Pueblo Entero (LUPE), went to Washington DC to receive the 2019 Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Award.

The awards ceremony was help at the Kennedy Caucus Room in the Russell Senate Office Building in Washington DC. RFK Foundation Director, Kerry Kennedy delivered a heartfelt opening speech about society’s responsibilities to fight for justice. Civil rights activist Dolores Huerta delivered an empowering keynote speech in which she reminded everyone that, “Si se puede!”

The awards ceremony was followed by a luncheon in which the three groups and other guests had an opportunity to connect and converse. Following the luncheon, the awarded groups, various members of the Kennedy family, and others, visited the resting site of Robert F. Kennedy to pay their respects. A short sermon was delivered and the group prayed. The three days in DC also included various solidarity and community events.

Dear Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Foundation, the Angry Tias and Abuelas of the Rio Grande Valley thank you deeply for this recognition. This will help us continue our work helping asylum-seekers along the border.
